West Midlands Environmental Leadership Programme
Closing date 9am on Wednesday 31st May 2023
Shropshire Wildlife Trust is a thriving charity based in Shrewsbury with over 300 regular volunteers and around 50 staff. We have a vision of a thriving natural world, where Shropshire's wildlife and natural habitats play a valued role in addressing the climate and ecological emergencies, and people are inspired and empowered to take action for nature.
In October 2023, we will be launching our West Midlands based Environmental Leadership Programme in partnership with UpRising. We are seeking two very different Youth Engagement roles to join our Education and Learning Team.
Over the next four years we will support c. 400 young people aged 18 to 25 from underrepresented and underserved communities across the West Midlands to build a stronger connection to nature and understand how this drives behaviour change. Participants will be supported to identify, co-create, and deliver nature engagement campaigns and activities that they believe will make the most difference in their local communities. They will all leave the programme ready to apply their experiences to the next steps in their leadership journeys.
Both roles will work closely together and with staff from SWT and UpRising, but each role will have its own distinct focus and areas of responsibility.
Youth Engagement Officer (Activism) - 35 hours per week (normally worked over 5 days).
Salary is £28,280 - £28,941 plus 7% pension contribution.
This role will work directly on our strategic transformation towards a community organising approach - addressing the climate and ecological emergencies by mobilising young people. They will ensure that all participants are supported during the programme and leave feeling inspired, confident in their own abilities and possess the skills and connections needed to take further environmental action. They will maintain a connection with participants after they complete the programme, signpost them to further opportunities and develop new ways for the views and priorities of young people to inform our ongoing work.
Youth Engagement Officer (Nature Connection) - 0.8 FTE (28 hours per week, normally worked over 4 days).
Salary is £28,280 - £28,941 full-time equivalent (£22,624 - £23,153 pro rata) plus 7% pension contribution.
This role will take the lead on providing varied, inspiring, nature connection activities throughout the programme, for participants of all abilities. They will use their own environmental sector contacts, along with SWT’s, to build a strong network supporting all aspects of the programme. They will ensure that participants have the tools they need to deliver nature connection campaigns which change people’s behaviours and can help communities reduce or adapt to the impacts of climate change.
No enquiries from agencies or for further advertising will be taken.

Who we are
Shropshire Wildlife Trust (SWT) has a vision of a thriving natural world, where Shropshire's wildlife and natural habitats play a valued role in addressing the climate and ecological emergencies, and people are inspired and empowered to take action for nature. We combine projects across Shropshire (including Telford & Wrekin) with advocacy and campaigning to restore nature and to engage people. We manage over 40 nature reserves and have almost 50 staff, 300 volunteers, and over 9000 members. SWT is an autonomous charity, but we are increasingly working collectively, as part of The Wildlife Trusts (TWT), to ensure that our local actions have a national impact and help to address global issues.
We value courage, respect, integrity, trust and responsibility. Whilst we are passionate in promoting our aims, we are not judgemental and are inclusive. We want our people to be as diverse as nature, so we particularly encourage applications from people who are underrepresented within our sector, including people from minority backgrounds and people with disabilities. We are committed to creating a movement that recognises and truly values individual differences and identities.
As a Disability Confident employer, we are committed to offering an interview to anyone with a disability that meets all the essential criteria for the post. Please let us know if you require any adjustments to make our recruitment process more accessible.
